GENERAL MESSAGE
All HW Householders and businesses across Norfolk are being urged to be vigilant of the threat of metal thieves.
With the value of copper rising by 44% (from £2934.56 to £4235.04 per tonne) in the last six months there has been significant rise in incidents from 681 incidents in 2008 to 404 on 2009
Thieves have also targeted lead flashings and have caused criminal damage to churches.
Police are urging the public to remain vigilant. Vulnerable sites include business premises, churches, factories, farms, scrap yards as well as domestic properties. People should mark their property for identification, and immediately report anything suspicious especially cold callers looking around for scrap metal obtaining as much detail as possible including vehicle index numbers.
Officers have been working closely with scrap metal sites throughout the county offering crime prevention advice and as a result there was a 41pc reduction in the number of incidents in 2009.
