FLIX IN THE STIX CINEMA

 “MOONLIGHT” (Certificate 15)

Saturday 15th July 2017 - 7pm for 7.30pm start

This Oscar winning coming-of-age film is heartbreaking and uplifting at once. A story about a young man from a hardscrabble Miami neighbourhood that focuses on three periods in his life, chaptered by the different names and identies he assumes, or is given, 'Little', ‘Chiron' and 'Black'. "Little' is played by Alex Hibbert, bullied, chased and rescued by Juan an imposing but gentle drug dealer whose clients include Little's increasingly bedraggled mother, Paula, (Naomi Harris). Juan then takes parental care of Little caring for him and opening his house to him. A bit older and now named Chiron, still bullied he begins to explore his sexuality.  After incarceration, the once fearful Chiron is now the bulked up 'Black' with gold teeth.

This film is about a gay man's journey from a deprived childhood through rage towards self-realisation.

FLIX IN THE STIX CINEMA

'HIDDEN FIGURES' (Certificate PG)

Saturday 29th July 2017. 7.00pm for 7.30pm start.

Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae are Katherine Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, a trio of Nasa scientists  who each played their part in sending astronaut John Glen, the first American to orbit thew earth, into space in 1962. These three are fun, fast-talking and fabulously coiffed. They're also African American women, which perhaps explains why this based on a true story nugget of history has remained untold until now. The performances are at once dramatic and comedic but each woman gets their own story space, although Katherine, a brilliant mathematician and mother of three who wears beautiful glasses is the one who brushes off everyday racism in order to prove herself to her stern boss, Al Harrison (Kevin Costner).

These women do wonders for rocket science and maths.

Tickets are £4.50 each and include refreshments.
